Annual General Meeting - Queens Hotel 6.30 pm. 27 March

The Chamber's AGM takes place today in the Queens Hotel, Penzance starting at 6.30 pm.  Tea and Coffee will be available on arrival from 6.00 pm.  

Speakers include  Marcus Wilkinson, Chairman of the Penzance BID Steering Group and Derek Thomas, Prospective Conservative Parliamentary Candidate for the St Ives Constituency.

Government guarantees London - Newquay air service with 4 year PSO

The Cornish Guardian reports that transport links to Cornwall have received a boost after the Government confirmed it will provide a four-year  financial guarantee towards safeguarding the Newquay to London air link.  The route has been under threat since last March when  Flybe announced it would terminate its service.

The paper goes on to explain that the existence of a Public Service Obligation (PSO) – a subsidy allocated by the Government to maintain air connectivity in the furthest reaches of the UK – on the route between Newquay and London will see the Government providing a subsidy to an operator to deliver the connection for a four-year period. Chris Sedgeman Scaffolding Ltd in the news again with an industry award

The Cornishman reports (21 March) that Chris Sedgeman Scaffolding Limited were awarded the prize for Project of the Year at the Construction News Specialists Awards, held just over a week ago at the Hilton Hotel, Park Lane, London. This follows recent reports of the Company winning a contract to provide scaffolding for works at Dawlish.

Update on Help for Fishermen (Storm related)

From Cornwall Council 19 Mar. 2014. Fishing businesses in Cornwall affected by the floods and storms since December can apply for assistance from Cornwall Council and the Marine Management Organisation. Our understanding is that the Business Support scheme can cover fishing businesses and their on-shore premises and equipment that has been directly affected by the storms and flooding but that the Marine Management Organisation scheme can cover loss of/damage to kit that happened at sea.

Public Consultation 20th March - 'The Range '

The Range is looking to build a store on the Questmap Business Park, Long Rock.  There is a public consultation at Ludgvan Community Centre on Thurs 20 March from 4.30 to 7.30 for interested parties to view and comment on the draft proposals.

Scilly Transport issues in the political limelight - Will anything change?

FRIST representatives Marian Bennett and Tim Guthrie gave convincing oral evidence to the House of Commons Transport Committee today and members of the Committee were aghast at the extent of the problems and sympathetic.  Cllr Chris Thomas, and Theo Leijer (new Chief Executive) also attended and spoke for the IOS Council.  Scilly's transport problems were in the limelight today but the Chamber Chairman asks will anything change ?
