Update on Help for Fishermen (Storm related)

From Cornwall Council 19 Mar. 2014.

Fishing businesses in Cornwall affected by the floods and storms since December can apply for assistance from Cornwall Council and the Marine Management Organisation.

Our understanding is that the Business Support scheme can cover fishing businesses and their on-shore premises and equipment that has been directly affected by the storms and flooding but that the Marine Management Organisation scheme can cover loss of/damage to kit that happened at sea.

 Business Support Scheme

The Business Support Scheme is being handled by Cornwall Council on behalf of the Government’s Department for Business and Innovative Skills (BIS). Fishing businesses, that have experienced physical onshore damage, are able to apply for grants of up to £2,500 from the scheme.

Compensation is not available from this scheme for fishing businesses if they were unable to fish due to adverse sea conditions; we understand the quota adjustments, to allow fishermen to make up lost income when conditions return to normal, have been introduced by the Government for these circumstances.

Eligible fishing businesses will be able to claim for costs, initially up to £2,500, for equipment damaged on land by the storms but not equipment damaged at sea.

Fishing businesses, with eligible damage, can use the Business Support Scheme application form to apply for a grant.

More information is available on the Cornwall Council website www.cornwall.gov.uk/floodrelief

Marine Management Organisation scheme
The Marine Management Organisation scheme is available to fishing businesses that have suffered lost and/or damaged pots, static nets and other strategic equipment due to the recent storms. Fishing businesses that have experienced eligible loss or damage can apply to the MMO for grants of up to £5,000 to cover 60% of the damage costs.
Details of how to apply for a grant is available on the Marine Management website
Applications for support should be made to the MMO by 6 June 2014.
